Just 20 minutes by train from St Pancras in London, St Albans could be a lifetime away from the hustle and bustle. The calmer rhythms of a country town, with a venerable cathedral made in part from the bricks left behind by the Romans in the ancient city of Verulamium, the colours are softer then London.

But don't be fooled: this is still a city with lively markets and active shops. I just happen to enjoy the tranquility that it also has to offer, whether it is the lakes in the park or the River Ver wending its way gently through the edge of Verulamium Park.
